Training and Extension:

* A New Approach to establishing stocking standards and evaluating stocking success in Complex Partially-cut Stands. In 2003-2004 Symmetree worked with the Ministry of Forests, the UBC Alex Fraser Research Forest and Lignum Ltd to develop a simple, versatile approach to development of stocking standards and subsequent assessment. The intent was to help managers to create stocking standards to meet a range of partial-cutting prescriptions where stocking will be attained through a combination of long-term overstory retention and understory regeneration. This approach augments existing procedures to better assess stocking contributions from a wide range of tree sizes while accounting for tradeoffs in growing space from these trees.

*Partial-cutting Solutions Workshop. Symmetree designed this workshop to be a “locally-driven working workshop” which addresses specific harvesting challenges in constrained local areas by working with local licencees and stakeholders. Symmetree has delivered this workshop throughout the province with excellent results and feedback.

* OtherPartial-cutting Workshops – Symmetree, (together with associates) developed and delivers five training workshops devoted to partial-cutting and silvicultural systems in British Columbia. These workshops use examples on the ground, and field exercises to illustrate options and considerations. A focus is for participants to practice layout and prescription development using structured exercises.

* Silvicultural Systems Handbook for British Columbia – Designed and authored by Symmetree in 2001 with the Ministry of Forests.

* Commercial Thinning in Interior Douglas-fir - In 1999 Symmetree worked with the UBC Alex Fraser Research Forest staff to develop commercial thinning templates and rationale for several pilot stands in several classes of mule deer winter range in the IDFdk3 biogeoclimatic variant.

* Introduction to Silvicultural System – a Self Study WorkbookSymmetree authored and designed this booklet for the Forest Practices Branch of the BC Ministry of Forests in 2001. The 120-page book was used in numerous partial-cutting training workshops, and was out of print by the time a second edition appeared one year later.

* Other Publications and Videos – Symmetree has produced over ten publications and videos for the Ministry of Forests. As well Symmetree helped develop a partial-cutting prescription, layout and harvesting guidebook and a companion set of videos for Weyerhaeuser BC Coastal Group.

*Silvicultural Systems Demonstration Sites - In 1994-95 Symmetree helped the Ministry of Forests Vernon Forest District establish three different silvicultural systems demonstrations areas, complete with trails, information packages, and self-guided learning experiences for forestry technicians and professionals.

* Decision Frameworks - 1994 Symmetree designed and produced A Protocol for Designing Silvicultural Systems to Meet IRM Objectives for the Research Section, Kamloops Forest Region, Ministry of Forests, Kamloops.

* Since 1993 Ken Zielke collaborated with a colleague to develop, and help deliver the SilvicultureTechnical Program for the Forest Management Institute of British Columbia (formerly the Silviculture Institutue). Bryce Bancroft has also been an active participant in this program.

* Symmetree developed, or helped to develop more than 12 training packages for the Ministry of Forests in British Columbia on topics ranging from: Preharvest Prescription Development; Mechanical Site Preparation; Vegetation Management; Freegrowing Stocking Standards; Commercial Thinning; Soil Conservation; Pruning, Fertilization, and Guidelines for developing Stand Density Regimes.

* Symmetree helped to develop The Silvicultural Surveyor Accreditation Program for the Ministry of Forests, Forest Practices Branch in Victoria. Working with surveyors and survey contractors, Symmetree designed a set of learning outcomes and performance criteria, and examination templates. Symmetree also helped design the program structure and the administrative process for the program.

Integrating knowledge, experience and common sense.
